Roy G. Guerrero Disc Golf Course

Set in the 395-acre Roy G. Guerrero Colorado River Metropolitan Park just east of downtown, this free 18-hole course — officially named the Raul Alvarez Disc Golf Course by the City of Austin, but known to nearly everyone as 'Roy G' — is one of the best-regarded tracks in Texas. Designer Mike Olse, a protégé of John Houck, built it in 2012 and returned for a major 2023 redesign that reworked roughly half the holes. The result draws consistently excellent player ratings and a spot among the state's top courses.

Don't let the flat riverside setting fool you: this is a demanding, wooded course. Fairways are tight tree-lined corridors that reward controlled, accurate throws and punish anything that strays. From the am tees it plays to a par of 62 over roughly 7,776 feet, and the longer pro tees stretch it further still. The signature moment is hole 17, a wooded tunnel that gradually opens to frame the downtown skyline behind the basket.

Because of its difficulty, it's best for intermediate-to-advanced players — newcomers are better off on the adjacent 9-hole 'Lil G' course. Facilities are excellent: parking, restrooms, water, a practice putting area and cart-friendly paths. Bring discs you can afford to lose in the woods.
