Mary Moore Searight Disc Golf Course

Set inside the 344-acre Mary Moore Searight Metropolitan Park in far South Austin, this free 18-hole course is one of the city's classic tracks. John Houck, one of disc golf's most prolific designers, laid it out in the early 1990s. It runs 5,157 feet to a par of 56 and weaves through stands of Ashe juniper (Texas cedar) on rolling, moderately hilly ground. The fairways are tight and tree-lined, so controlled, shaped throws pay off far more than raw distance.

The hole players remember is 15, a hilltop tee that opens several risk-reward lines to the basket. Overall it sits comfortably at an intermediate level. Newer players can still enjoy a round, though the wooded corridors will punish errant throws. Beyond the discs, the surrounding park adds miles of trails, a creek, picnic areas and a playground, so it's an easy place to spend a half-day.
