Scored for mixed terrain
Hoover Reservoir Parkland is just over 2,050 acres of City of Columbus land wrapped around the reservoir north-east of the city, and the disc golf course sits by the dam at its south end. Brent Hambrick designed the original layout in 1990. The Columbus Flyers Disc Golf Club, which maintains the course under a lease agreement with Columbus Recreation and Parks, publishes the farewell letter Hambrick wrote to the disc golf community on July 8, 1997, after his leukemia relapsed; the course and the club's flagship tournament are named for him.
It plays as a full-length championship course: 27 holes, large concrete tee pads, double tees and multiple pin placements on many of them, and a genuine mix of open shoreline fairways and wooded ones. There's more elevation change here than central Ohio usually offers. Depending on which tees and pins are set, the round runs somewhere between about 6,843 and 9,344 feet. The newest nine holes are lettered A through I rather than numbered. It's free to play, and the parkland is open 7 a.m. to 11 p.m.
