Kentwood Park sits on 14.6 acres in southwest Raleigh, off Kaplan Drive, and has been a city park since 1966. Raleigh Parks and Recreation lists the disc golf course as 18 holes at 4,085 feet with concrete tees and scattered foliage — one of only two disc golf courses the city runs. That works out to roughly 225 feet per hole, which makes it a short, tight, accuracy-first round rather than a distance course. The park also holds two playgrounds, four lighted tennis courts, a youth baseball field, a picnic shelter and restrooms, all packed into the same small footprint, so the open holes cross ground other park users are on.
What gives the course its standing is how long it has been played. Wake Living describes it as the second oldest course in North Carolina, and the Kentwood Disc Golf club has kept a competitive calendar on it for decades: Summer Doubles on Friday evenings from April through August, founded in 1987; Fall Glow Doubles on Friday nights once the clocks change; and the Sling 'Til Spring singles series on Saturday mornings through the winter. League entry is $10. The course itself is free, open seven days a week from dawn to dusk, and the club recently replaced the baskets with new DISC Catchers paid for by volunteers and sponsors.
