Wabun Disc Golf Course

Wabun is the Minneapolis Park & Recreation Board's short, free course tucked into the Wabun Picnic Area on the northeast side of Minnehaha Regional Park, the 170-acre park the Board has run since it bought the land around Minnehaha Falls in 1889. Nine holes, all played as par 3s for a par of 27, run 57 to 83 yards apiece on a flat layout with tree obstacles and concrete tee pads — short enough that it's a genuinely easy round for someone throwing their first discs. It's one of only two disc golf courses inside Minneapolis proper, the other being the 18-hole course built into Theodore Wirth Regional Park's Par 3 golf course on the north side of town.

The course doesn't sit in isolation — Wabun Picnic Area got a new river overlook and playground in 2007, and the surrounding grounds now include several picnic shelters and a wading pool, so on a warm weekend you're sharing the park with families, not just other disc golfers. There's no fee and no permit required to play, which is a contrast with some Twin Cities courses like Three Rivers Park District's regional courses that charge a daily rate.
